Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers began their steady rise to stardom in 1978 with the hit single “Breakdown” off their self-titled debut album. With their second album, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers cracked the top 40 in the US with the singles like "I Need to Know" and "Listen to Her Heart." The band's third and fourth albums, with favourite hits like "Don't Do Me Like That" and "Refugee,” both quickly went platinum. In 1988, when the Heartbreakers went on a brief hiatus, Tom Petty joined the popular supergroup the Travelling Wilburys and also embarked on a solo career. Tom Petty's 1989 solo album, Full Moon Fever (the first of three successful solo albums), was a huge success, and included the hits "I Won't Back Down" and "Free Fallin’.”

When Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers reformed in 1991, they released Into the Great Wide Open, which included the hit singles "Learning to Fly" and "Into the Great Wide Open." In 1996, the band collaborated with Johnny Cash on his Grammy Award-winning country album Unchained. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. Since then, the band has continued to perform at festivals and sell out concert tours. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers also continue to make great music; The band's most recent album, Hypnotic Eye (2014),was their first album ever to debut at number one on the Billboard 200 chart!
