The musical originally premiered in Vermont, in the town of Barre, in 2006. Production was also conducted in Vergennes in 2006 and a tour between Massachusetts and Vermont in 2007. It was not until 2012 that Mitchell met the director Rachel Chavkin, a highly regarded director in the industry, with whom she reworked the stage production, adding new songs and dialogue. The revamped musical, which was made for the stage and directed by Rachel Chavkin, had its premiere Off-Broadway at the New York Theatre Workshop on the 6th of May 2016 and continued till the 31st of July. The musical then had several other productions, and it finally premiered on Broadway in 2019.
