Jack Kent Cooke chose the current name of the team because he wanted it to reflect royalty. The colors purple or “forum blue” and gold were also selected for this reason. Bruce McNall purchased the team from Buss in1987. It was him who acquired Gretzky in the historical deal of 1988. The team was acquired by Philip Anschultz and Edward P. Roski in 1995.
