At first, Jake Owen was signed under the publishing company of Warner/Chappell Music, but things took a turn when he met Jimmy Ritchey, who is a well-renowned songwriter and a record producer. The two of them, in teamwork with Chuck Jones, created the lyrical content for the track "Ghosts." The song was originally meant for Kenny Chesney, but Chesney ended up not recording it

 Although, it garnered the attention of the Nashville executives of SONY BMG, who offered a record deal in 2005 to RCA Nashville. Per their suggestion, he had to change his first name to "Jake" instead, in order to avoid confusion with the likes of Josh Gracin and also Josh Turner.
