Porgy and Bess made their first performance at the Colonial Theatre in Boston on September 30, 1935.Despite failing to attain initial success, it soon went on to become one of the most-celebrated operas with their performance at the 1976 Houston Grand Opera Production. In 2001, Porgy and Bess became the official Opera of the state of South Carolina. Today, only a few operas are as successful and influential as the Porgy and Bess.
